We all know how harsh Canadian winters can be! That’s why it’s crucial to make sure you’re taking the appropriate steps to prepare and maintain your home during the colder months.
But what are those appropriate steps? If you’re a new homeowner or not used to maintaining a home, you may be a bit unsure of what to do!
Don’t worry. I am here to help. Here is my handy winter maintenance checklist that you can use and save for future winters to make sure you’re on the right track.
It’s also important to know when to call in a professional! If you don’t feel comfortable doing something, it’s best to leave it to someone who does.
Clean your furnace
Check and clean or replace your furnace air filters each month during the heating season.
Clean your humidifier
Clean your humidifier two or three times during the winter season.
Proper ventilation
Vacuum your bathroom fan grills to ensure you have proper ventilation.
Inspect your attic
Examine your attic for frost accumulation and check your roof for ice dams or icicles. If there’s excessive frost or staining on the underside of your roof or ice dams on the roof surface, have an expert come and look into the issue.
Check your windows and doors
Examine your windows and doors for ice accumulation or cold air leaks. If you find any, make a note to repair or replace them come spring.
Regular maintenance checks
Have an inspector carry out regular maintenance checks on your hot water tank and furnace. The last thing you want is to lose hot water or heat on a -20 °C day in February!
Testing your sump pump
Test your sump pump. You want to make sure it works; otherwise, you could end up with a flooded basement and foundation damage.
Electrical maintenance
Schedule an electrical maintenance tune-up with a professional to ensure your wiring, fuses, and general electrical panel are in working order.
Check the surroundings of your home
Keep an eye on trees around your home. Trees that are heavy with ice and snow can break and fall onto your home, leading to damage to your roof and windows.
Frozen pipe prevention
Prevent frozen pipes by using sealant or insulation. If pipes burst or even crack a little, they can cause expensive water and plumbing damage.
